University Club Scholarship Program

University Club members have been making generous donations to the University Club Scholarship since the fund was established in 2003. The fund continues to thrive thanks to your continued support. This year the Club awarded two $1000 scholarships to remarkable, hardworking students of excellence – Haley Parrish and Jason Wendt.

At an award luncheon last month, Indiana Memorial Union Executive Director Hank Walter introduced the scholarship recipients and Susan Platter, UClub Scholarship Chair, presented each with an award plaque. These were students with exemplary work records, high GPAs and a bright future in academics at IU.

During the ceremony, to everyone’s surprise and delight, University Club member Dr. John Thiel announced that he would match the scholarship amounts and donated an additional $1000 to each recipient. Thank you Dr. Thiel for your generosity!

University Club 2019 Scholarship Recipients

Meet the recipients who received the University Club Scholarships:

University Club 2019 Scholarship Recipients - Jason WendtJason Wendt

I am the middle of five children in my family and the second child to go to IUB so far! I began working at the IMU in my freshman year. Besides balancing work and school, I go to the gym 5-6 times a week to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I am part of the LGBTQ+ community. I expect to graduate Spring, 2020, and plan a future as an educator to encourage the next generation of students to reach their goals.

Thank you so much for choosing me as recipient for the IUB University Club scholarship this year! This scholarship validates the dedication to my work at the IMU. I will be using this money directly to pay for classes and other expenses related to my education. I am grateful to the donors of this scholarship and intend to utilize this money effectively. This financial assistance will be great benefit to me as it was to my older brother who also received this scholarship.

I am a junior studying biology with a chemistry minor and plan to graduate Spring, 2020. My future goals are to go to dental school and become a dentist specializing in treating children. Applying to dental schools is quite expensive. Most students have to take out loans just to apply and take the DAT exam. This scholarship will let me focus more on pursuing my dreams than thinking about where I will need to get the money to pay for all the things I need.

Thank you 100 times over to the donors of this scholarship. Donors are stepping stones for students to achieve their aspirations, and no amount of gratitude could repay that.

Compared to some other Big Ten Clubs we are a relative newcomer to raising funds for scholarships. However, once established by the University Club Board of Officers in 2003, we’ve made tremendous progress. For several years now we have be able to award $1,500 scholarships to three outstanding students who work at the IMU. Funds are generously donated by members of the University Club; the Indiana University Foundation handles the funds. Due to your continued support the fund currently has over $43,000 in the endowment!

Ruth Albright, Member of the Scholarship Committee, presented three $1,500 scholarships to students Kirsten Hawley, Lucas Corley and Michaele Ullrich at our Annual Membership Meeting on April 25, 2016, furthering our efforts to foster collegiality among our members and the campus. To be eligible, students must plan to return to campus for future study, must take a minimum of 12 hours of academic work, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5, work in the Indiana Memorial Union, and have exemplary work records.

Along with Scholarship Chair Suzanne Phillips, the entire University Club Board of Directors would like to thank everyone who donated to the 2015 – 2016 scholarship fund. We are proud of our club and the tremendous support of our members in this very worthwhile effort. Please join us in reaching out to the most important segment of our IU community, our students. Thank you again for your generosity.
